The Dream Trip - Chapter 17/Epilogue

The alarm was a rude awakening, but the girls were up and taking turns in the shower quickly so they could get to the airport with plenty of time. Their flight was to depart at 10:30am. They could hardly believe their trip was about to end. The reality of the end of the trip had not hit any of them yet.

After dragging their luggage outside the hotel door and getting everything loaded into the taxi that reality started to hit. Suddenly they were all quiet as they watched out the window the scenery they had seen when they arrived. They got all checked in and stopped at the duty free shops to pick up a few last minute gifts before heading to customs. After customs they were ready to sit down and wait until boarding time.

Each of the girls was lost in their own thoughts of the trip, and the normal constant chatter had turned into self reflection until their cell phones began to ring. They had planned to call the lads, but the lads had beat them to it. So much for self reflection, the chatter was back and each of the girls was retelling the events of the night before, how excited they were about the videos, laughing at things said from the other end, and softly sharing some special comments meant only for each couple. The most quiet were the good-byes. And as quickly as the calls came, they ended.

The call came to board the flight to the US and as the girls too one last look from the plane window, they all knew they had experienced a very special dream trip.

............
Epilogue

Things had pretty much returned to normal for the girls after they returned. Pictures were shared and tales were told. The remaining days of summer passed quickly. As the girls settled into their regular routines with work and college the events of the summer became a special memory.

And then one day at the beginning of October a package arrived for Mona. She quickly called the other girls to meet with her as it was from Ireland and she had a feeling that they should all be together. As she opened the package she found the pictures from the photo shoot and the 4 videos that the girls created. There was also a fifth video.

They put the DVD in the player and watched. It was called Celtic Thunder and they all sat with their eyes wide as they saw each of the guys in this amazing musical production. There was also an envelope with four front row tickets to a performance in two weeks at a venue near them including an invitation to meet with the lads after the show.

The lads had been holding out on the girls and now they would all get to see each other again. Front row seats watching their favorite Irish men. Who could ask for more!

The Dream Trip - Chapter 16

Morning came all too quickly with the late night, early morning, celebration with the lads that the girls had all enjoyed. It was time to pack up and head back to Dublin for one last night in Ireland. Suitcases were bursting at the seams and there were still a few more souvenirs to purchase for friends back home. For one last time the girls loaded the car and headed east.

All during their ride they chatted about all the places they had seen, places they had missed and plans to make another trip to Ireland as soon as they could. Even with all that, most of their conversation centered around meeting Ryan, Paul, Damian and Keith. They considered themselves to be very lucky to have met some amazing talented lads all by chance.

Briana brought up Damian's comment about seeing her in the States and the other girls agreed that there must have been some hidden message in what the lads were telling them. There was not enough information for them to figure this out, and they decided to wait for the adventure to come to them as they had when they planned their trip to Ireland.

Accommodations for the night were a splurge at the Fitzwilliam Hotel. It was close to St. Stephen's Green and also Grafton Street and all the shopping they would need for the day. Most other locations were within walking distance. The girls drove out to the airport first to drop off the car and took a taxi back into town. They didn't want to have to deal with trying to return the car early in the morning and then checking in for their flight. It seemed that the clerk at the front desk at the hotel knew them, but they had never met before.

They were escorted up to their room and were very surprised when the door was opened. This was no regular room, it was a suite! Not what they had signed up for. As Mona turned to the bellman, he smiled and said, “This was what they wanted for you.” And the girls knew at once that their lads had something to do with this. As they entered the room there was a huge bouquet of flowers on the center table with a note.

“We couldn't let you four beautiful ladies leave Ireland without a last night to remember. We can't be with you, but we have made arrangements for the evening. Be downstairs dressed for an evening out in 'the big smoke' at 7:00.” signed Paul, Ryan, Keith and Damian.

The girls were without words. This was truly a dream trip. They had no idea what to expect, but started getting ready as soon as they read the note. When they arrived in the lobby there was a college aged girl who approached them.
“Hi girls, me name's Aisling and the lads have given me instructions to help you have a great last night here in Dublin,” Aisling told the girls. “So let's get going!”

Aisling was great, and the girls liked her immediately. They headed toward Temple Bar and Oliver St. John Gogarty's. for some Irish dance lessons and a trad music session while they had some drinks. Aisling took pictures as the girls each had their try at dancing. Before long they were all sitting and heartily laughing.

“Time to move on girls,” Aisling directed, “We've got more to do this evening.”

Aisling hailed a taxi and as they all climbed in she directed the driver to the Gaiety Theater. As they pulled up there was a huge crowd outside starting to enter. The Gaiety was a restored Victorian theater originally built in 1871. The restoration was amazing right down the to old fire curtain. The production this night was Riverdance.

“Can't let you lassies leave without seeing an Irish production of Riverdance,” Aisling said. “I'll meet you all outside after the show. I've a few last minute things to take care of for the lads.”

The show was great and so were the second row seats. The girls could closely see the dance steps and movement of the dancers feet. Great music, costumes, and a wonderful overall performance.

As the girls left the theater Aisling was outside with another taxi.
“One last stop tonight girls and I hope this one really makes your trip memorable. Ha' Penny Bridge, driver,” Aisling shouted to the taxi driver.

The girls and Aisling exited the taxi at the Ha' Penny Bridge. As they girls headed toward the bridge access they noticed some bright lights and a set up that looked like a movie set.

“Okay, girls, this is your moment in the spotlight. You are each going to have a photo shoot and short video to make,” Aisling was smiling as she explained. “You will get both to keep, but so will the lads! So think carefully about what you say!”

After a short consultation with photographer, and each other, the girls started their video blog and photo shoot. Mona spoke about her expectations for an adventure in her trip and how honored she was to meet such a gentleman as Paul. Darcy spoke about how beautiful and scenic the landscape was everywhere they traveled, especially Giant's Causeway where she first met her 'hero', Ryan. How lucky she was to meet such a caring man. Briana followed with her blog to Damian. Briana's biggest memory was the time she spent walking the ancient walls of Derry. How amazing to be able to play some soccer in Derry with Damian. She apologized for beating him even if it was two on one! And finally Caitlin did her video memory including Keith. She mentioned how she would always be on the look out for another Big Red and definitely wanted to take some surfing lessons. Watching the surfers along the coast was a special memory. Yeowww!! She told him how he made her smile and how much she loved his voice when he sang.

After the video blogs the photographer set up the girls along the bridge edge for some solo photos and a few group photos. As this all happened the girls noticed that they had drawn quite a crowd thinking that they might be celebrities. They giggled at the thought as they finished up the photo shoot.

It was getting into the wee hours of the morning and the girls had an early flight. Aisling rode back to the hotel with them in the taxi and bid them farewell. They exchanged addresses so they could keep in touch and invited Aisling to come to America as they would love so show her around.

As the girls did their last packing they chatted about how amazing this last evening had been. They wanted to make sure to call each of the lads before the plane took off to thank them for this incredible evening and everything they had done. They couldn't wait to get the videos and pictures.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 15

This had been an amazing adventure for the four girls. As the limo arrived at the hotel, one by one, each couple left the limo as the lad escorted his date to their room to say a private good night. With the exception of Damian and Briana tender kisses and long embraces were had by all.

Damian was the first to escort Briana to the room. Their good-bye was a little awkward as their age demanded certain behavior. After some small talk Damian leaned in to Briana and kissed her on the cheek. This time Briana was not surprised as she was when they first met in Derry and returned a kiss on Damian's cheek. Damian wrapped his long arms around Briana as she did hers around him. They were new friends saying good-bye and held on for just a bit to keep the memory fresh. As they parted Damian whispered in Briana's ear, “See you in the States!” and turned to leave as she entered the room quite surprised at what she heard.

Keith and Caitlin had a similar awkward moment, but when Caitlin turned to Keith and said, “I'll miss riding in Big Red.” a big grin crossed Keith's face. He leaned in to her as he pulled her close. Caitlin had to stand on her tiptoes and almost felt Keith lift her off the ground as he took her breath away with a kiss to be remembered and strong hug to go with it. “Take some surfing lessons,” he said as he turned to leave. “You never know where you might find me again!”

Ryan was next to leave the limo with Darcy. He had his arm around her shoulder as they entered the hotel and never took it away all the way to the room. As they approached the door, he gently moved Darcy from beside him to in front of him. Ryan took his hands and put them on Darcy's face and pulled her close. As he did his hands moved back through her hair and around her head holding her in a soft, long lingering kiss. Darcy was almost light headed and hung on to Ryan moving her head to his shoulder after the kiss. “Who is going to help me the next time I sprain my ankle?” Darcy asked.
“You never know how things might change in time, Darcy,” was Ryan's answer. He gently kissed her on the head, turned her to the door and watched her enter, then left.

Mona and Paul had been quiet all this time in the limo. As Ryan returned they both knew it was their time to part. Paul kept his arm around Mona's waist much like he did the night of the concert. As they neared the door Paul asked, “Do you ever visit New York City?”
Mona was surprised by this question coming out of the blue. “I've been there a couple of times, but have never had a reason to really go back.”
“We'll have to keep in touch, as you may have found a reason,” as Paul winked and pulled Mona close.

If Mona was looking for Prince Charming she knew that she had just found him. A long intense kiss with strong arms supporting her was all she could remember at the moment. Was she in a dream? She opened her eyes as Paul broke the kiss and pulled away. There was that smile and twinkle in his eyes that she saw in the beginning. A prince of a man. He nodded his head, turned and headed back down the hall to the elevator and the limo. Mona floated into the room.

As the girls drifted off to sleep for the few hours left of the night they all dreamed of their perfect man. This trip to Ireland had been everything they had hoped it would be, and even more. Tomorrow they would travel back to Dublin for one last night before heading home.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 14

As they finished their dinner and dessert Ryan excused himself for a moment and then was back at the table nodding to Keith, Damian and Paul. The guys, as perfect gentlemen, helped to direct the girls back to the entrance of the restaurant. The girls figured they would be hailing a taxi and heading back to the hotel as it was around 10:00, but that was not the case.

When they exited the restaurant there was a black limousine waiting just outside the door. Ryan directed, “Just this way lassies.” and they all entered the limo. The girls had no idea what was to come next.

The limo driver only drove about ten minutes before he pulled up in front of another location. The girls couldn't see where it was with the tinted windows and the fact it was night outside, but as soon as they exited the limo they started to chuckle. The sign on the building said Rafters Bar and Restaurant. Right below the name was a sign that said “Karaoke Nightly”. When the girls saw this they knew was the lads had in mind.

They all entered and headed toward some seating that seemed to be reserved near the karaoke stage. Paul headed over to get things set up and Damian begged to be first. Halfway though his song, Paul jumped on to the stage to sing along. When Keith took his turn, Ryan almost bumped him off the stage to get some time at the microphone. Before they knew it the girls were standing along side the lads singing songs with them. The Guinness was flowing for most of them. Ryan preferred Grey Goose and cranberry, Paul liked his Bud Light, while Damian and Brianna stayed with non-alcoholic beverages.

At times there was so much laughter they were almost in tears. Darcy actually had a very good voice and the lads were impressed with her version of “I Will Survive”. They moved from genre to genre as the evening wore on. Keith doing some country with Wichita Lineman, and Damian doing a great Bobby Darrin version of Mack the Knife. Paul love to chose songs totally out of his genre and put his spin on them, while Ryan chose most of the softer songs. That all was until the lads were thoroughly relaxed and started to parody each other.

Before anyone realized it, the bar had emptied and they were the only ones left. Sadly it was time for the evening to end. They all headed out to the limo. Each of the girls sat closely snuggled with her date as the limo drove them back to the hotel. The girls dreaded the end of the evening knowing that it also meant that their vacation was coming to an end.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 13

The taxi dropped off the girls at the front of the Quaywest Bar and Restaurant. As they got out of the taxi they noticed Paul standing at the doorway smiling. There was just something about the look in his eyes that said something was up. Mona caught that immediately, but still had no idea.
“Ladies, if you will follow me, please,” Paul said as he led the girls inside past the bar to an area of tables with one large empty table. He nodded at a waitress as he passed by her and she headed off somewhere.

Briana was curious as to where the other guys were and couldn't contain herself, “Where are the others?”

“All in good time, Briana. Have a seat here,” Paul directed each of the girls to a specific seat. The large table was quite a way back in the restaurant and was almost private as it was not too crowded yet.

As soon as the girls were seated Paul excused himself and told them he would be back in a minute. The girls looked as Paul as he left and then at each other with confusion. As soon as Paul left the girls heard some music. But it was not coming from the bar. It was coming from the door where Paul retreated.

Darcy turned and tapped Mona on the shoulder and motioned to the other girls to look at the door. Through the door came Paul, Ryan, Keith and Damian singing Will Ye Go Lassie, Go with Keith playing his guitar. The girls were in shock. As the guys came closer they noticed that each of the guys had a red rose to hand to their date. What amazed the girls was how well they sang in harmony as if they had done this together before. They seemed so at ease with each other as they sang. They knew that Paul and Ryan knew each other, but not about Keith and Damian.

As they finished the song and the girls clapped for them they all took seats next to the girls and handed them the red roses. This was without a doubt something very special and the girls wanted to savor every moment. They blushed with a little embarrassment and all started talking at once. And then the laughter started.

The guys did admit that they all knew each other professionally and had sung together before with some others in a tour through the US. The girls could not believe that they had never heard of the group that was promoted through PBS. They figured that other than the fact they didn't watch much PBS, their personal lives were very busy and they really had not gone to many concerts. They promised the lads that the next tour they would be front and center.

It was an incredible evening. All the couples enjoyed the evening and it was entirely too short. The restaurant had delicious food and they all enjoyed a small glass of wine to toast that they were all together. Each couple looked like they had known each other for a long time and meshed well.

Darcy and Ryan were busy talking sports a lot of the evening, while Mona and Paul discussed travel and music in general. Briana and Damian were busy chatting about soccer and unforgettable games they had played, and Caitlin and Keith talked about traveling the world and Keith's surfing.

Before they knew it dinner was done and all eight finished a small desert dish. The girls figured that the evening would be soon coming to an end, but the lads had something else in mind. They knew that the next day the girls would be heading back to Dublin, and then on back home and wanted to make this evening something for them to remember. Since the lads all had music in common they wanted to end the evening with a fun event.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 12

Friday morning arrived and the girls awoke feeling refreshed and well rested. As soon as they finished breakfast they headed for the Foyleside Shopping Center and the Dunnes Store to see what outfits they could find to wear that night, even though they had no idea where they would be going. The girls split up to get to the different departments so they would be done early. Mona wanted something sleek and classy that would fit being with Paul. Darcy wanted something sporty, but conservative to wear with Ryan. Briana wanted something fun and flirty to wear with Damian, and Caitlin wanted something funky to wear with Keith and she wanted to find a hat to go with her outfit.

As they girls were busy shopping one cell phone call started them all ringing, one by one. Paul called Mona and told her that they should all meet at Quaywest for dinner at 7:00PM. He and Ryan would be there. Mona contacted the other girls and had them call Keith and Damian and make sure that would be okay with them. The girls also told Keith and Damian that there would be some others joining them. When Caitlin mention to Keith about Paul and Ryan she was sure she heard him chuckle, but couldn't be positive. When Briana told Damian, there was a pause at his end and then he told her it would be great craic.

The girls had no idea what was in for them that evening. Little did they know that their calls had started a flurry of other calls. They finished shopping all with amazing new outfits and headed back to their hotel in Derry City to get ready for the evening. Quaywest was further than a walk, so the girls decided to take a taxi. They wanted to look nice and fresh for the evening.

The taxi ride was full of chatter about each of them meeting each of the lads and making a fabulous connection while they were on vacation. Mona and Darcy, while totally enchanted with Paul and Ryan, reminded the younger girls that this was a vacation and they would probably not be seeing or hearing from the guys after they returned home. While Briana and Caitlin dreamed about future dates, they did realize that this was an adventure and something they should cherish for the time being and not think too far ahead.

The girls chattered recalling how each of them met each of the lads under some unusual circumstances that many people would not believe. Their trip was now almost ending and it had brought with it the adventures that they were all open to when they left home. All of them had fallen in love with Ireland, both the Republic and Northern Ireland. As the taxi drew near to the restaurant their excitement increased. When they thought about it, they hardly knew these lads, but trusted they were in for a memorable evening.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 6

Caitlin and Briana were really surprised to find Darcy and Mona in the room when they returned. Seems that Paul an Ryan had an early morning rehearsal for recording and couldn't stay up too late either. Paul promised to stay in touch and try to catch up with the girls at some point. He and Ryan said they had some friends in Derry that they might visit come the next weekend. The girls planned to tour Derry the next day and then head to County Donegal and Lough Swilley, then up to Glenveagh National Park for a few days. That would put them back in Derry on the following Friday a few days before their return home.

Briana and Caitlin were surprise to see Ryan running when they headed out for their run the next morning. As they started to stretch, he went flying by with his iPod on and you could see he was in the zone. There was no way they could keep up with him, so they started out easily and were just building some speed when he came up behind them on his next lap.

“So we have some runners here, eh? Good to see that,” Ryan talked as if he hadn't even been running.

“I doubt that we could even keep up with you, Ryan,” Briana told him as he was jogging along her side.

“I'm about to start to cool down, you two set the pace and I'll keep up with you, alright?”

So before Briana and Caitlin realized it they were setting the pace for themselves and Ryan. By the time they lapped the hotel grounds a couple of times they were jogging and cooling off. Ryan had already cooled down at their pace and continued on waving good-bye to them. The girls knew that Darcy liked Ryan but realized that while he was a quiet guy, they enjoyed his company running. They headed into the hotel to shower, get packed and ready to head out to Derry.

This trip had already provided some new adventures for them.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 5

As they pulled up to the hotel, the girls looked at each other thinking that Ryan had pulled a quick on on them. The hotel was like something out of a storybook. It was luxurious and huge. At this point it was getting so late in the day and they really had no other choice so they checked in and got Darcy set up with a spa appointment before dinner. After leaving Darcy in the spa, the other girls explored the grounds around the hotel. The gardens were immaculate and the fragrance from all the flowers was intoxicating.

As they arrived back to pick up Darcy from the spa, they were very surprised to see Ryan bending down in front of Darcy wrapping her ankle. Darcy was sitting in a spa chair wrapped in a plush robe, smiling with a slight blush on her cheeks.

When Ryan saw Darcy turn her head toward the girls, he did so also, “Hi girls. Since I knew you were coming here, I stopped at Boots, the pharmacy, and picked up a wrap for Darcy's ankle. It's doing much better.”

Mona thought this all was very suspicious and questioned, “What are you doing here, Ryan?”

“Sorry,” he always seems be be apologizing, “I'm working not to far from here and the company puts us up at this hotel. I knew they had a spa, so that's why I recommended it. My friend and I will be in the hotel pub later this evening and it would be great to visit with you all. We really didn't get to visit much today.” He turned to Darcy and smiled. “I would think if you iced your ankle and kept it elevated for a few hours, you might be feeling a lot better.”

Ryan finished wrapping Darcy's ankle and helped support her to the room the girls were all sharing. He said good-bye and mentioned the pub again as he winked at Darcy. With Darcy not being able to walk much the girls decided to splurge this one night and get room service hoping that they would be able to spend some time in the pub later. Ryan was without question a very handsome man, and he seemed to have this bit of a rogue about him. All Briana and Caitlin heard was the chatter between Darcy and Mona about having met Paul and Ryan. They were obviously taken by the two men.

Dinner was delicious in this hotel and the service was unbelievable. It seemed strange to them that an employer would put their employees up in such a nice place, but considering they were in a different country, they shrugged their shoulders and headed down to the pub helping Darcy as she hobbled her way along. Ryan was right, he ankle was better, and the ice and sitting with her leg elevated made a huge difference. They would be able to get on the road the next morning and head for Derry for some sightseeing.
The girls arrived at the pub and found a nice snug to sit in. The barman noticed them and nodded, but it wasn't for a couple of minutes that they realized they were supposed to order their drinks at the bar. No waitresses here. It was a long beautifully crafted wood bar. As long as they had to get up to get their drinks, they decided to relocate to the bar. Even though it was legal for Briana to drink here, she preferred not to and ordered a Coke. The other girls all ordered a half pint of Guinness. Their backs were to the entrance and they never realized anyone else entering as they were engaged in a lively conversation with the barman.

Mona almost jumped off her stool as she felt an arm around her shoulder.
“Well fancy meetin' you here, darlin'!” the Irish voice behind her said.

Once again Mona was speechless as she turned just enough to see it was Paul with his arm around her shoulder. As she relaxed her tenseness from a minute earlier, Paul had to grab her and keep her from falling off her stool. They all let out a laugh.

Ryan was obviously with Paul and climbed onto the stool next to Darcy.
“Now what would you be doing sitting up here?” he asked. “You should be in a snug with your leg up.”

“Why don't we all move over to that area so we can sit and visit comfortably?” Paul directed everyone to an area with cushioned chairs and sofas.

Now that everyone was settled with Paul sitting next to Mona holding her hand, and Ryan next to Darcy tending to her and her ankle, they looked like friends who had known each other for a long time. Finally the girls had a chance to ask the questions they had kept to themselves. Did the two men know each other? What were they doing here together? Did Paul know anything about this? Who was Ryan really?

Ryan and Paul answered all the questions. Yes, they knew each other as they both sang in the same group. The two of them were up in Ballymena recording some songs for a future CD. They would be singing a couple duets and the recording studio was not too far from the hotel. Paul only realized that Ryan had bumped into the same girls he met in Dublin when Ryan was telling Paul at dinner about this girl with a sprained ankle that he met when he was at the Giant's Causeway earlier in the day. They were thrilled to be able to surprise the girls in the pub.

The rest of the evening was spent with Ryan and Paul getting to know Mona and Darcy. Caitlin and Briana left early as they felt out of place.
“Now why can't I meet some handsome Irishman?” Caitlin asked Briana as they walked the grounds of the hotel.
“It's because you are a sports dork, like me,” Briana teased back. “I wish I had my soccer ball with me. I really need to work off some excess energy. This sitting in the car and eating are just killing me. I think I'll be going for a run tomorrow morning. Are you up for that?”

“Sure, a couple of miles before we have to ride to Derry would be great. Let's head in now and get to sleep so we can get up early and run. I don't expect that Darcy and Mona will be in too early,” Caitlin agreed as they headed back in to the hotel.

The Dream Trip - Chapter 4

The time in Belfast went quickly as the girls wanted to get out from the big cities and into the country, so they headed to the Antrim coast and the Giant's Causeway. The day was beautiful and sunny. The basalt formations were amazing and like many of the tourists the girls decided to climb up to some of the higher areas for the incredible view. As they climbed around the formations, Darcy slipped and fell at one point and twisted her ankle. As the girls came to her aid so did a striking dark-haired, blue-eyed Irishman.

“Can I be of any help here?” he asked politely.

Darcy replied, “I seem to have sprained my ankle as I slipped. I'm not sure I can walk on it.”

“Here let me help you,” he said as he reached down and scooped her up in his strong arms moving her to a place where she could sit comfortably.

Obviously an athlete, he seemed to have no problem lifting Darcy up in his strong arms. At first she was in so much pain, and also embarrassed, that she really didn't notice how handsome this man was. When he picked her up and her face was close to his, she quickly took notice and blushed. He noticed her looking at him and smiled back. What a wonderful smile.

As he set her down he said, “Let me take a look at that ankle.” He easily slipped off her sandal and gently checked her ankle. Darcy cringed and he took note. “Sorry, I don't think anything is broken, but it does look like a good sprain. You'll probably need to take it easy for a couple of days.”

“Are you a doctor?” Mona asked as she stood next to this stranger.

“Oh, no. But I used to play Gaelic football and saw this kind of thing happen all the time. I apologize again... My name is Ryan,” he explained as he directed his comments toward Darcy.

“My name is Darcy, and this is Mona, this is Briana, and Caitlin. We're on vacation, and now I've probably spoiled it for everyone.”

“Darcy, nice to meet you. And I'm sure you haven't spoiled anything. Just a wee inconvenience.” Ryan had barely taken his eyes off Darcy except for the introductions.

After a few minutes they all decided to head back up the huge hill leading to the visitor center and to the parking lot. While the girls had walked down the hill to get to the Causeway there was going to be no walking back up the mile long steep hill for Darcy. Ryan carried Darcy to the tram and along with the other three girls rode the tram back up to the top. He was quiet for the 10 minute trip up the hill as he sat next to Darcy. Darcy was a little overwhelmed at how nice this man had been and was constantly apologizing for taking up his time. Ryan in turn kept telling her it was fine.

When they arrived at the top of the hill, Ryan again carried Darcy to the car and helped her into the passenger seat.

“Wait here for a minute, please,” he instructed Mona and the girls and off he went with no mention as to what he was going to do.

A few minutes later he arrived carrying a plastic bag full of ice. “Here, put this on your ankle. Try to keep it elevated, if you can,” he instructed. “This is the best thing for a sprain. Ice and rest. Where are you girls off to?”

Darcy explained that they had kept their schedule loose so they had the ability to move freely. Ryan suggested that they head to Ballymena where there was a hotel with a spa that would help her ankle heal faster. They knew they would miss some of their touring time as this was not on the agenda, but Darcy needed some treatment and hopefully could get some in Ballymena. The hotel was only about an hour away, so they took Ryan's suggestion and made it an early day heading to the Tullyglass House Hotel in Ballymena.

Travels in Eire - Epilogue

The party lasted well into the wee hours of the morning. There was so much to celebrate besides the marriage of Darren and Cailin. The reunion of Conner with his parents and the first opportunity to see their first grandchild was a bonus that no one expected, especially Maura and Philip. And Cailin's gran was in attendance and had the opportunity to meet Rorey, her distant relative.

Besides her boss, a few of the girls from her office made the trip across the pond for the wedding. Not surprisingly, they found a couple of Darren's friends to be quite accommodating and charming. Cailin would not be surprised to hear of one or two deciding to come back and visit again soon. Declan seemed to take a liking to one of the GOTT girls from Derry. She was wearing a huge smile all night long. In passing Cailin warned Declan that he better be a perfect gentleman with her, or Darren would be coming after him. Declan laughed commenting that he was always a slightly imperfect gentleman, but he did get the warning.

When Conner and Darren had a minute to talk, Conner explained that he, Jessica and little John were in attendance at the wedding. They had slipped in the side door while Darren was outside waiting for Cailin to arrive. They stayed at the back of the church so as not to be seen and sneaked out as soon as the ceremony was over, so they could get to the hotel and hide in their room until Declan told them all was ready. Conner laughed when Darren told him how upset he was after the ceremony.

“Brother, I just had to pull this one last one over on you,” Conner teased. And they hugged until they almost fell over. Maura and Philip took John up to the room to bed so that Jessica and Conner could enjoy the party.

Keith kept the music rocking the house much of the night. Damian sang a couple of popular tunes, and Ryan joined in with a few of his new songs that had just been written. At some point the music turned from dance and rock music to an Irish session with everyone sitting around listening to tunes they had grown up hearing all around.

And as always with the band, there were a few lasses for whom Keith, Damian and Ryan had caught their eyes and sat mesmerized watching the musicians.

Most of the attendees had reservations at the Connemara Coast Hotel for the night ,knowing it would be a long party and there would be much drinking and craic. It must have been around four in the morning when the crowd grew thin and the band packed up. The bar had officially closed hours earlier, but Declan made sure there was an extra supply of whiskey and beer under a table.

Cailin and the other young women headed off to their rooms while the men had their last few toasts of the night.

Tomorrow began a new life for Cailin as the wife of Darren Ryan.

Thinking back to her summer vacation, which in itself was a get away from New York City, Cailin smiled knowing that she was now exactly where she belonged. Only new adventures awaited both Cailin and Darren together as a couple and she knew that whatever life threw at them, they would weather any storm.

End.

Travels in Eire #75

Declan lead Cailin and Darren into the reception room at the Connemara Coast Hotel.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the Mr. and Mrs. have arrived, finally!” he announced as they entered to a huge cheer.

Cailin and Darren were lead to the center of a long table decorated in white linens and crystal glasses. Everything seemed to sparkle, including the chandelier in the center of the room. The colors were lush deep greens and blues with draperies bordering the windows that looked out past the rocky shore to Galway Bay. The bride and groom were flanked by the groomsmen and bridesmaids. As Cailin and Darren looked past their table they saw their families sitting a round tables just to the outside of the long table with a dance floor set up right in front of them.

Suddenly there was a uproar of clinking of crystal glasses calling for a kiss between the bride and groom. Cailin and Darren obliged willingly with a long loving kiss. Then a shorter tapping of a glass followed by a “here, here” for an announcement.
Declan was the bearer of the glass and appeared ready to make the first official toast. He began,
“A first official toast is a very special one and should always be given by a family member. I may be a great friend of Darren's, but I'm not a family member.”

As Declan held everyone's attention and continued his speech on family, that seemed to be endless, a figure slipped in the door and quietly moved to the back of the room.

“So to conclude this toast, I ask, is there a family member who would like to make this first toast to our lovely couple?” Declan glanced over to Philip as if he expected Philip to make the toast.

The lone figure at the back of the room announced, “I would be honored to bring the first toast to this celebration for my brother and his new wife!”

The room was abuzz. Maura suddenly broke down in tears and Philip was holding her, while Philip himself was beaming. Their son, Conner, had come home.

As he talked, Conner moved to the center of the room. Darren's older brother had a polish to him that Darren had not seen before. Obviously this had to do with his banking job in America. Darren also noticed out of the corner of his eye that Jessica, Conner's wife had slipped into the room holding their son, John. Maura did not catch this yet as her eyes were glued to Conner.

“My brother has discovered that there are some very special women who come here to visit and end up stealing an Irishman's heart. His Irish sweetheart will be there for him when times are difficult, and when times are sweet. This I know as I have found my American sweetheart who fills my everyday. Conner glanced back to Jessica as she acknowledged Conner's statement.
And my toast is this Irish blessing:
There are 4 things you must never do: lie, steal, cheat, or drink.
But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love.
If you must steal, steal away from bad company.
If you must cheat, cheat death.
And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away...
May you both live as long as you want, And never want as long as you live.
Slainte!”

And the party began.

Travels in Eire #74

The ride to the Connemara Coast Hotel was in Darren's parent's car, but it was just Darren and Cailin. They wanted to have just a few moments together to savor the ceremony and would not have the time as the day wore on. Cailin noticed that Darren seemed a little distracted. She had become more adept at reading him over time. Most emotions she could easily read, but there was something else here.

“Darren, is everything okay? What is it?” Cailin gently tried to pry Darren's closed demeanor open.

“I just thought....No I was sure......It was supposed to be......,” is all Darren would say.
“Darren, you are making no sense. What was supposed to be?” Cailin was totally confused.

“I trusted him to make it happen. He told me he could handle it just fine.” and now Darren was getting angry.

“Darren, stop! Pull over here!” Cailin demanded and Darren responded by pulling to the side of the road just a short way from the hotel.

Darren turned to Cailin and responded, “My brother.”

“What about your brother?” Cailin realized there was something she did not know about that was not happening the way Darren had planned.

“He was supposed to fly over with his wife and baby and be here for the wedding. He promised he would make this visit. I thought I would see him at the church, but I didn't. I haven't heard from him for the last 3 days when they were supposed to leave America,” Darren's voice was shaking from both concern and disappointment.

“Darren, there is nothing you can do about it at this point. We have a few hundred guests waiting for us at a reception. What about your parents? Do they know?” Cailin was still trying to get some information from Darren.

“It was to be a huge surprise for them with my brother coming to visit with his wife and the baby. I was so worried about you arriving at the church late that I totally forgot that I should have seen him also. Then there was the rush to the ceremony and now,” Darren was almost shaking. “I have no way to contact him.”

“Darren, I don't know how to help you through this. I'm really surprised about this whole thing. You never told me either. I wish I knew what to do for you,” Cailin was on the verge of tears with worry for Darren's brother. “We can't sit here like this. We need to get to the reception and have someone help. I'm sure your da would know what to do.”

“Cailin, I need to get over this. It's OUR wedding day and I'm ruining it with this problem that has upset me so much. I'll share the information with my parents when we have a minute at the reception and then we'll all work it out together.” Darren was putting on his work face as a problem solver and determined not to let this spoil the reception.

As they turned into the parking lot Declan was pacing back and forth in front of the door. He had a worried look on his face that lit up when he saw Cailin and Darren pull in.

“What in God's earth has taken the two of you so long? The hotel rooms are here! Everyone is waitin' on ya,” he shouted breathlessly. “And Darren I need you first. There's some trouble a brewin', and we need to take care of it. Cailin can you just wait here for a few?” Declan ordered. He seemed so much more in charge than earlier today.

It was only a few moments when Darren returned and seemed a lot more relaxed.

“Darren, what was that all about?” Cailin knew something was up.

“All in due time, honey, all in due time,” and he smiled the smile that caught Cailn's eye from the beginning.

Travels in Eire #73

Cailin sat in the back of the car with her gown carefully placed so as not to wrinkle or soil it. Her mother sat next to her and her father sat next to Declan. The church was only a few miles away, so it was a short drive and would only take a few minutes. At least that was what everyone thought!

Just as Declan turned on to the main road heading toward the church, the car started to make a strange sound. Declan calmed everyone with his words, “No worries all, it always does that.”

But as they traveled the road the sound turned into a grinding, and then everyone could smell something burning. Declan pulled over to the side of the road and started shouting, “Everyone out, quickly!”

As Cailin exited the car she could see black smoke coming from the engine compartment. She, her mum and dad had a look of horror on their faces. Declan just had a dumbfounded look of surprise.

“Guess we are going to have to find some alternative transportation,” Declan announced.

None of the passengers had their cell phones with them and there was no one they could contact at this point. Cailin was trying to stay calm, but in her anger all she could do was laugh. Before she realized it, all of them were roaring with laughter.

“Okay, I'm going to start walking,” Cailin announced. “There doesn't seem to be any traffic on the road today, so there is no catching a ride.”

What a scene, with Cailin's mum and dad helping Cailin to hold up the train to her gown as they walked down the road followed by Declan as he mumbled to himself about the fact that he should have had his car fixed before this. On a calm summer day this would have been fine, but as always on the Connemara coast there is at least a slight breezed coming off Galway Bay, or sometimes a strong wind. Today was a moderate breeze and Cailin's veil was like a tail on a kite, blowing in the wind, as they walked along. They still had about a mile to go and were already late for the ceremony.

As they walked they started to hear a sound behind them. It was a clopping sound of a horse and cart. Declan hailed down the driver and before anyone knew it, Cailin and crew were situated in the cart trotting down the road behind a white Connemara pony. The cart was not made for passengers, so here was Cailin sitting on the back with her legs hanging off and her gown carefully tucked up still trying to keep it fresh and clean. The fresh part was pretty much gone now, but she did the best and her mum held her veil from flying all over as they trotted along.

It did take longer than expected and as they arrived at the church a few people were standing outside looking for them to arrive, including a worried Darren. When he saw this pony and cart coming down the road and got a glimpse of Cailin in her white gown he doubled over in laughter. It was just so much like their lives – everything totally unexpected.

One of the groomsmen headed in to the church to let everyone know that Cailin had arrived. Once everyone was in place, and Mary and Sean seated, the ceremony began. Despite the wrinkles and slight soils in Cailin's gown, and extra tendrils of her unruly hair that had fallen from her up do, Darren looked down the aisle knowing in his heart there was no one else he would have chosen to be his wife. Life would bring many unexpected surprises and they would weather them together both in joy and sadness.

The ceremony that followed was touching and memorable. Ryan's voice and choice of music carried the congregation through with tears and laughter. The church was full of well-wishers and friendly faces. Cailin and Darren tried to absorb every minute.

They suddenly realized it will all done as the priest asked to turn to the congregation and introduced them as Mr. and Mrs. Darren Ryan. A huge cheer filled the sanctuary as Darrren and Cailin headed out of the church and on to the reception at the Connemara Coast Hotel.

Travels in Eire #72

The morning crept in quickly as everyone was still sleeping except for Maura and Mary as they started breakfast. Soon the aromas of Irish fry wafted through the house and one by one everyone woke up. The best cure for a sore head is a good greasy Irish fry and as the plates were put on the table those who stayed the night at the B&B took at seat at the table.

Ryan and Damian had taken the last empty room upstairs. Darren shared his room with Keith, so thankful that the B&B had rooms for all. Darren, Keith, Ryan, and Damian all looked like they had partied hard, but seemed to be bouncing back with the breakfast and hot cup of Barry's tea. The table filled up and once again there was plenty of chat and laughter.

As soon as they finished Keith, Ryan and Damian headed for the Connemara Coast Hotel to check out arrangements there, shower, dress and head to the church. Cailin headed to her room followed closely by her mother.

“Cailin, I just want to check and make sure everything is okay with you.” her mother stated as she closed the room door behind herself.

“What do you mean, mum,” Cailin responded.

“Cailin this all seems to have happened so quickly and I just wanted to make sure you have no reservations about this wedding,” Cailin's mom looked at her with a slightly worried look on her face.

“Mum, I just realized the other day that I have never been happier. Working here in Ireland and being part of my heritage has been such a blessing. I feel like I belong here, more than any where. This is home to me. I know you will be so far away, but it's only a plane flight and I can come and visit anytime. And I hope you and dad will be over here more often.” Cailin tried to calm her mother's fears.

“Then I guess you had better get into the shower, or you will be late for your wedding. Hardly right to keep your future husband waiting on your wedding day!” her mother smiled.

Cailin had not tried on her wedding dress since the day it was purchased in New York. She decided to do her hair up as Ruth had suggested with two tendrils curled to the front. Her makeup had a light touch to show her beautiful white skin. A touch of green eye shadow with a dark purple eyeliner to accent her green eyes and a little mascara finished the look. She wore on piece of jewery around her neck – the Connemara heart that Darren gave her. She changed the leather chain to a silver one for the wedding. Her earrings were small diamonds that her grandmother had given her. Her last accessory was a green garter that she slipped on to her leg as she smiled. She turned to look in the mirror and smiled. It was just perfect.

There was a knock at the door and Cailin jumped as she was startled out of her thoughts. It was her father.

“Time to go Cailin,” he said slowly as he looked at her lovingly. “You look beautiful,” and Cailin could see his eyes tear up.

“Dad, please, I'll be in tears if you start,” Cailin tried to chide him into a smile.

Cailin's mom came in the room and had that same look on her face, but it was more. There was also a look of pride.

“Honey, Darren and his parents have already left for the church so he doesn't see you. We need to get going. They have a friend driving us there and he is waiting outside.”

Cailin, her mum and dad headed out the door. As Cailin looked at the car waiting for them she had to laugh. It was Declan, Darren's friend they had met a while back when they visited Spiddal for the first time. He was standing at the open car door with a big grin on his face.

“Cailin, there's still time. You could have me instead of that dolt Darren, you know,” Declan kidded.

“Declan, you are so considerate, but I've already made my decision here. You might meet some of my girlfriends though. They are all cute too!” Cailin kidded back.

And off to the church they headed.....

Travels in Eire #71

The weather for the drive to Connemara was beautiful, and Darren and Cailin enjoyed every minute of this trip talking about details for the wedding that they wanted to make sure they took care of. Cailin was an organized person and kept notes that they could refer to also. Darren was in charge of making sure the Ryan and Keith knew what they needed to know and were in place for both the wedding ceremony and the reception. Ryan would be singing at the church at Keith was in charge of the music for the reception. Darren knew Keith would gather together a few friends and rock the place until the wee hours of the night.

The last few days leading up to the wedding itself were as busy as could be. Emails and phone calls were flying back and forth between members of the wedding party and family. Every night Darren and Cailin were invited someplace new for a reception or get together. Once Cailin's parents arrived at Darren's parent's B&B, there was a gathering so everyone could get to know each other. The Guinness and Irish whiskey were flowing, and often when Cailin awoke she was not sure what day it was or what she needed to do. These days were full of Irish “craic” and family love.

Friday evening came and it was time for rehearsal. Everyone in the wedding party had arrived in Spiddal and the surrounding small towns, and had made their way to the church for the rehearsal. When Darren and Cailin arrived they saw Ryan talking to the priest and organist. Ryan Kelly was not only talented, but had a plan and wanted to make sure all went well for his part in the wedding. He waved to Darren and Cailin as they entered the church. Ryan had chosen all the music for the ceremony over several weeks of emails back and forth with Darren and Cailin. For the Prelude they chose the Love Scene music from Tristan and Isolde. For the bridesmaids processional he chose “Air-Your the One” from Circle of Friends and for when Cailin walked down the aisle they chose “Lark in the Clear Air” by James Galway.

Ryan would be singing “Give me Your Hand” during the lighting of the Unity Candle, and also and also a Communion song. Then Ryan would sing a song he wrote especially for Darren and Cailin. Cailin was so surprised that Ryan would do this for them. For the recessional Ryan would be singing the Irish Wedding Song rather than a serious classical ending. Both Cailin and Darren felt so lucky to have Ryan handling all the church music for them.

The bridesmaids and groomsmen arrived and they all had a quick run through of the ceremony. Cailn felt like she was dreaming as she went through the motions of the ceremony. Her life had changed so drastically since she first had come to Ireland for a vacation.

After the rehearsal all the participants headed over to Darren's parents for a huge rehearsal dinner and celebration. Maura, Darren's mom, and Mary, Cailin's mom, had been cooking and preparing for the for the last 2 days. They were fast friends already and were having a great time together. Sean and Philip had also hit it off well and seemed to be spending more time down at the local pub picking up a game of snooker when they could, and bragging about the upcoming wedding.

This was the party to beat all that had come before. The food was amazing and the booze was flowing. And then Keith arrived with his guitar, Ryan with his, and one of the friends Keith brought along that Darren had been trying to get for a fund raiser, named Damian McGinty. When the music started the party actually became even more lively, filled with love, friendship and laughter.

There would be many sore heads in the morning but it seemed no one cared, and neither did Cailin or Darren. What a way to get to the wedding!

Travels in Eire #61

The next few weeks seemed to pass very quickly. Cailin and Darren had been attending several parties in their honor and began making their wedding plans. During this time Darren was also in the midst of working on a new fund raiser for the hospital and spending late nights at work. Cailin was trying to work out many of the details on her own in Derry without much knowledge of where to look. She did decide that a trip back to New York was a must to find her wedding dress. What she really wanted was for Darren to go with her to meet her family and friends.

Cailin contacted her new friend Ruth to help with some ideas about planning for the wedding. Ruth was a wealth of information and Cailin leaned on her for the few days that Ruth had available before she headed to the United States herself. Cailin was so happy the she would be able to return the hospitality to Ruth when she headed home to look for a dress.

Darren and Cailin had decided on an Irish wedding shortly after her citizenship papers came through, so there was not much time for planning. Availability for reservations were few and far between in Ireland. Cailin's parents and a few close family and friends would fly over to Ireland for the wedding. But Cailin and Darren would make a trip to New York City as soon as Darren's next fund raiser was over for an engagement party so that her New York friends and family could meet Darren.

While they wanted the wedding to be at Darren's family church in Spiddal, the small local church would not be large enough. Cailin's parents would probably stay at Maura and Philip's home, and most of those flying over would be at the Connemara Coast Hotel. The reception after the wedding would also be located there. So the decision was made to have the wedding there also.

Considerations also had to be made for invitations to all of Darren's friends from Derry and the musician friends he had worked with. It was going to be a large wedding. The day before would be a wedding mass at Darren's family church, and the civil ceremony would be with the large group at the Connemara Coast Hotel.

The most difficult thing to do was to set a date. It was not unusual in Ireland for a wedding to be during the week, which made the flying arrangements a little difficult for those coming from the United States. Darren and Cailin were trying to juggle arrangements for some of the attendees. So while it was close to Christmas, they decided for mid-December.

On of the reasons that they felt they wanted to wait was because they had asked Ryan Kelly to sing at the ceremony, and wanted Keith Harkin to help out with the entertainment for the reception and both of them would be out of town until mid-December.

Plans were all coming together and Darren and Cailin had made arrangements to fly to New York City for a long weekend. So much to do and so little time in New York City.

Travels in Eire #55

As Cailin stepped off the bus in Derry Darren was waiting for her and greeted her by wrapping his arms around her and planting a big kiss on her forehead. They both laughed and shared a long loving kiss. Cailin hadn't realized how much she missed Darren and was anxious to share the last two days with him but she also realized how absolutely starving she had become on the bus ride home. Not to worry as Darren had anticipated how hungry Cailin would be and made arrangements to meet Keith for dinner and a little business on the side.

They headed into Derry chatting all the way about Cailin's ride with Ryan, her visit with Rorey, and the invitation by Ryan to attend mass at St. John's.

“Darren, I told Ryan that when he came to Derry I owed him a dinner for the ride and company from Dungannon to Mullaghmore. Rorey and I heard him sing and you really should see about Ryan performing at one of your fund raisers.” Cailin was feeling pretty good that she could make a musical suggestion to Darren.

Keith was already inside the restaurant with a Guinness sitting in front of him. He waved to Cailin and Darren and yelled out for two more cold ones. It was a casual restaurant, and not too many people were there. Cailin got the feeling they knew Keith as a regular. The conversation turned to music and Cailin brought up seeing Ryan sing in church.

“He's mostly done pubs and church, but he does have pipes. He's toured some in the US also.” Keith added to the conversation. “I could probably get him up here to give us a tune for the Hospital Festival Fund Raiser.”

“So Keith, are you going to help me produce this project? You have such access to the kind of musical groups that would be best for a festival. Especially since this will be a summer outdoor festival. No where near Glasgowbury, but something small at a park with about five or six acts during the day. And of course, you would be the headliner!” Darren was hoping that having Keith as the headliner would bring in a bigger crowd and more donations for the hospital.

“Yeow!! Of course I'd love it. Have to work around my other stuff. I'll be heading over to the States for a while. Probably about 4 months or so.” Keith sounded excited to be part of this.

“No worries, Keith, remember how far in advance I need to plan this. It will be next summer and I'll make sure to work with you on the dates. Just wanted to make sure you were on board for this. Now let's get this hungry lass something to eat!”

Dinner was full of conversation and laughter. Darren and Keith shared some stories about some of the groups they know and some of the crazy things they had done.

The evening ended with a last round of drinks and laughter and Darren and Cailin headed back to Cailin's flat. This had been an extraordinary evening and Cailin was just bubbling with energy as they headed up the stairs to her room. Maybe it was all the Guinness.

As always Darren reached around Cailin to open the lock on the door, like he had done since the first night they met. But this time was different. Darren leaned in for a long, deep loving kiss. Tonight was not going to stop at the door.

Travels in Eire #54

There was something about being in Mullaghmore, that made Cailin's sleep even more restful than usual. She woke as the sun shone through the bedroom window feeling happy and alive. She dressed and was ready to head downstairs just as Brendan was heading up the stairs to make sure she was awake. He saw her coming down and smiled a good mornin'.

“So lassie, will it be one of my special breakfasts with all the trimmings today?” he asked as they reached the bottom of the stairs.

“Actually Brendan, I'd just like some tea and toast, if you have it. I've had a few too many Ulster fries and I need to watch my diet! she laughed back to him.

“Your choice lassie, but your missing a real treat.”

Cailin didn't want to hurt Brendan's feelings, so she acquiesced to a small version of Brendan's special breakfast with a cup of tea. She knew that he would still make a full version, but this way she would still be a gracious guest.

Rorey arrived as Cailin was finishing about half of her meal and stayed for a cup of tea. They then headed off to Ardboe. The road to Ardboe passed by the carvery where Cailin had first met Ryan. As they motored down the road she recognized his SUV in the parking lot.

“Rorey, we need to make a quick stop here please,” she knew Rorey would not refuse. “I want to see a friend and thank him.”

Cailin climbed out of Rorey's small compact and entered the restaurant. As she poked her head in she saw Ryan drinking a cup of tea. He had obviously finished his breakfast and sat alone as he drank his tea. He looked up at the door as she entered, and smiled, surprised.

“HI Ryan, I'm on my way to church in Ardboe and saw your SUV outside. I just wanted to thank you again for the ride the other day.”

“Ardboe for church? Why not here at St. John's?” Ryan asked back. “Actually I'll be singing while my da play the organ today.” Cailin could tell Ryan wanted her to hear him sing.

“Let me check with my ride,” Cailin was hoping Rorey would approve.

Rorey asked Cailin, “Who's this singer again? Did you say Ryan Kelly? I've heard of him singing in some pubs around here. And now he's doing a mass? Ought to be interesting, I'm up for this.”

Ryan came out of the restaurant at that point and Cailin gave him the thumbs up. He walked over and introduced himself to Rorey. They had a few quick words about people they knew in common and the he said they needed to be off to church. St. John's was just around the corner and down the street a bit. It was a small pretty church. It seemed that most of the parish was attending this mass. Cailin wondered if they came to hear Ryan and his father.

Rorey and Cailin were seated about midway back in the pews and noticed the balcony with the organ. Ryan had added a jacket and tie to his dress shirt and stood off to the side at the front. The mass was beautiful and Ryan's voice filled the entire church. His voice had a slight raspy tone at times, and other times pure and true. He was very talented. One song he accompanied himself with his guitar. Cailin was so glad that she and Rorey had this opportunity.

After mass was over, Ryan introduced Rorey and Cailin to his parents. Cailin reminded Ryan that she owed him a dinner the next time he came to Derry and Ryan promised that would be soon. They parted ways and Rorey and Cailin headed for the Old Ardboe Cross to say some prayers for family members who were buried there.

Visiting the Old Ardboe Cemetery was bittersweet for Cailin this time. She now knew so much more about her family tree thanks to Rorey. After a while, they headed down the road to Dungannon for Cailin to catch the bus back to Derry and to see Darren for dinner.

Travels in Eire #52

As they finished their lunch the rain had stopped and Cailin had used a few minutes to pull some dry clothes out of her backpack and use the restroom to change into some dry clothes.
“Quite the fashion statement,” Ryan smiled and commented as she came out the door to get into his SUV. It was an outfit that Ruth had helped her choose.

Cailin laughed, “Sorry, I just couldn't bare to get those wonderful leather seats all wet again.” And she climbed into the vehicle.

As they headed down the road Ryan was quiet until he blurted out, “Do you like sports? You are from New York City, right?”

Cailin didn't really follow sports too much, but she could carry on an intelligent conversation about sports in general. She was wondering if Ryan thought just because she was from New York City if she was involved with the sports teams there.

“I know about sports, Ryan, why do you ask?” she was trying to be considerate of his interests.

“I follow a lot of American sports teams and wondered if you did too?” Ryan explained. “I'm a big Celtics fan. But that's a Boston team.”

“Ohhhhh,” Cailin responded. “Do many people here in Ireland follow American sports? I had never thought about that. Darren never really mentions sports too much. Mostly he talks about music and concerts.”

“You should have Darren bring you to a Gaelic football game. Now there's a sport!” Ryan was almost beaming. “I used to play some myself. In my younger days that was.” Cailin could see how Ryan was proud of his country's sport and that he had played. He had the body of an athlete, but looked more like a runner.

“Ryan, our American football players are all bulked up, you look like a runner. It is very different that American football?” Cailin was doing her research.

“Actually, I am a runner. when I stopped playing footy, I started running to stay healthy. Running is a huge thing here in Ireland too. We have lots of competitions throughout the country. With the running my body shaped changed. And I can run when I'm traveling. No equipment needed. Except a GPS that is.” Ryan was slowly opening up and chatting more as they drove. This quiet man was now feeling comfortable with her and she was please with that.

The ride to Mullaghmore was quicker than Cailin had expected. She pointed out Connor's pub and B&B to Ryan and he pulled up front to drop her off. Cailin offered a drink for her driver, but he declined.

“I accept that for now Ryan, but the next time you have a chance to come up to Derry, you have an open invitation for dinner with Darren and I? You have no idea how much I appreciate this.” Cailin wanted to make sure Ryan understood her appreciation.

“Now that sounds like a plan. I will hold you to that. I hope you can cook,” Ryan chuckled and smiled as he pulled away back in the direction they had come.

Travels in Eire #51

Days began to flow into a regular schedule for Cailin. She adjusted her work schedule to coordinate with New York as much as possible. She didn't really want to work late into the evening to match their work hours, so much of her research was done before her office in New York was even open. The transition was going smoother than she had imagined. Her home office was networked so she could communicate easily with New York.

Cailin's afternoons took her off to the shops down the street for snacks, food and groceries. She felt so comfortable here. Regular calls to her parents in hopes that they might consider a trip over to visit kept her up to date with the goings on at home. Almost every evening Darren would stop by on his way home and either stay for dinner, or to take Cailin out for dinner. On a rare occasion, Cailin would meet Darren at his place for dinner. As a guy, his place was neither fully equipped for cooking, or very well stocked. Cailin had to laugh the first time Darren invited her over. When Cailin thought her kitchen was small, she found Darren's even smaller.

Cailin also started spending time with some new friends she had met through Darren. She and Ruth O'Leary, along with Ruth's sister Joyce, had spent a few girl evenings and done some shopping in town. With Ruth and Joyce being musicians also, they didn't have much time to spend with Cailin, but when either of them, mostly Ruth, were in Derry, they spent time together. There were a few times that they had gone out to a club late at night and Ruth would stay over at Cailin's. They loved shopping together, and Cailin was becoming quite the shoe shopper. Her style was changing too as Ruth helped her choose some new clothes. Darren seemed to enjoy this change.

Some nights Darren was busy in late meetings and Cailin was on her own. She found that she enjoyed some time to herself and was anxious to explore more than she could without a car. Darren was still very protective and wanted to make sure that Cailin was always with someone who knew the area. Cailin also wanted to take a weekend and return to Mullaghmore to see Rorey. She had not seen him since she had moved back to Ireland.

The biggest problem Cailin had with traveling around is that she didn't have a rental car like her vacation and was not familiar enough with the buses that traveled outside of Derry. Darren was very protective of her and wanted to make sure she was safe. After some discussion about her taking a weekend away to visit Ardboe and Mullaghmore, Darren came up with a plan to help her navigate the roads and still be able to be mostly on her own. Darren would have gone with her, but had meetings that weekend for another fund raiser for the hospital that could not be changed.

Darren was not beyond using his music connections to help facilitate this venture when he could. He felt if he could get Cailin on the right bus to Dungannon, then Keith's friend Ryan Kelly could help her get to Mullaghmore from there. Ryan lived right off the Dungannon Road between Dungannon and Mullaghmore and could drop Cailin off at Mullaghmore and get her back on Sunday to the bus in Dungannon to get home. Now this whole plan needed the cooperation of both Keith and Ryan. Darren was pretty sure he could depend on Keith as they had known each other for a long time and Keith only had to see if Ryan was available on Saturday and Sunday to pick up and drop off Cailin. On the other hand, Cailin felt strange with this, but trusted Darren to take care of the necessary details. Cailin would catch the bus at the Foyle station in Derry and arrive about 2 hours later in Dungannon center. From there Ryan would meet her and drive her to Mullaghmore. Cailin would stay over at Brendan's pub and get a ride back to Dungannon the next day to catch the bus back home. It was a perfect plan if all went well.

But as things go, not all plans go so well. Cailin was still getting used to some things that are so natural in Ireland. Never go anywhere without an umbrella. Once she was on the bus to Dungannon, it started to rain. As she traveled, the rain came down harder. It started to remind her of the night she first arrived in Ireland. The bus was going slow and she could see the sloshing water as they drove. It was still raining when they arrived in Dungannon and pulled up to the curb at the bus stop. There was no cover when Cailin exited the bus.

As Cailin exited the bus she looked around for Ryan. It had been a while since she saw him and didn't know what kind of car to look for. As she searched she was getting soaked. She suddenly realized that something was covering her. It was a large umbrella.
“Looks like you are in need of a towel and a ride,” Ryan chuckled and smiled as he covered her with the umbrella. “I'm parked over here,” he directed her and took the backpack she was carrying. Cailin could have sworn he was having a good laugh over her current condition. He seemed to be walking with his head down and turned away so she couldn't see his face.

“Ryan, I really appreciate you taking the time to come here and pick me up,” and she stopped in her tracks as Ryan lead her to a huge SUV. “Th-this?”

“Yes, this is mine. Is there a problem?” Ryan looked at Cailin quizzically.

“It's just that I'm so used to seeing all the small compact cars here, I hardly realized anyone having such a big car. It's fine, if I can climb up high enough to get in!”

Ryan stood by with his umbrella and a helping hand as Cailin literally climbed into the front seat of the vehicle.

“I'm so sorry that I'm getting the inside of you car wet. I should know better already. I was just so excited about making this trip,” Cailin tried to keep her wet hair and skirt from doing too much damage.

“No worries, Cailin. This is my splurge. The seats are leather. They do fine like a cow in the rain. Are you all settled?” Ryan settled into his seat and started the engine. At least Cailin had no fear that they would be run off the road.

They barely got started when Ryan turned to Cailin and asked if she was hungry and if she wanted some lunch. Cailin had not thought too much about it during the ride, but she was hungry, but didn't want to inconvenience Ryan.

“Ryan, it was already an inconvenience for you to come to Dungannon to pick me up, I hardly want you to have to stop just for me,” she was trying to be considerate, but was hopeful.

“Cailin, I was coming to Dungannon to stop at the post anyway, so it's no trouble. And I haven't eaten yet, so if you are up to a little lunch we can stop by the Otter Lodge (http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/Otter-Lodge-Cookstown-P12279) just down the road for some great fish and chips. It's a great lunch location. Or you can just sit in the car while I eat something.” Ryan turned and smiled as he said this so she understood he was teasing.

His jet black hair and sparkling eyes along with that smile were quite charming. Overall Ryan was a pretty quiet man, but seemed to love getting the best of Cailin.

They put in their orders and were able to sit at a table overlooking the river. Even with the rain, it was a beautiful view. Over lunch Ryan probed Cailin about her experiences so far in Derry and her time in Ireland.
